'91 Wagon.

Daughter at college complained that car failed to start a couple of times after it sat for a few days. Started the next day.

It failed to start once early in the summer (after sitting idle for a few days). I cleaned contacts on coil, and it started all summer, until I put it up on jackstands getting a new clutch cable and master cylinder prior to its return to college.

Blue spark, pump(s) running, fuel comes out back of pressure regulator, car does not start.

Today, as I started through the diagnostic for the umpteenth time, it suddenly started and ran fine.

My guess - second fuel pump is loosing its prime after a few days. Perhaps it is the hose in the fuel tank, or perhaps the in-tank pump. The fuel coming out of the rail may be more air than fuel (I cannot see it from the driver seat).

The Chiltons manual says to remove the access cover to disconnect the hoses, then drop the tank to access these components. However the Brickboard threads I have read on the subject seem to say that I can get the internals out of the tank through the access port without dropping the tank. I pulled the access cover off, but I will wait until I have a fresh gasket for the bung before trying to remove the bung.

Must I drop the tank? How can I test the in-tank pump before pulling it out?
