I posted this on the 900 model forum, and didn't get any responses. Since the 740s used the same transmission, I decided to post it here also.
My '94 945 turbo's automatic transmission is acting up. At times, usually when the ATF is warmed up, the car won't reverse. The shifter seems to engage properly in reverse, but the slight 'thunk' never happens. Reving the engine does not usually make it engage, although sometimes it does. It acts like it is in neutral. All forward gears seem to work fine, and the overdrive switch and solenoid function properly.
Here is some more background. The radiator neck cracked at the top hose inlet, and the car overheated. As soon as I noticed it, I shut it down and had it towed home. When I drained the coolant, I only recovered about 1/3 gallon. I replaced the radiator and coolant, and retorqued the head bolts. The engine sems to run fine and exhibits no oil or coolant leaks so far. I took it on some trips, and seemed to notice that is was sometimes slow to engage reverse gear. I thought maybe the ATF level was low, but I checked it and it appeared ok. But since it was 30k miles since last changed, I flushed it with the IPD hose and 12 quarts of Chevron Dexron. The old fluid had a slightly burned odor, and was light to medium brown in color. After the flush, the fluid level was a bit low, and the no reverse situation developed. I added fluid to the level mark, but the situation persists. Sometime reverse works, and sometimes it doesn't. I didn't drop the pan to clean it and the filter, but I'm thinking I should do that, and maybe flush the fluid again.
Any other ideas you might have?
