Closed cooling system. Start up issues. 120-130

The last time I openned the closed cooling system and then put it back together I had some problems with air getting stuck in there resulting in the thermostat not having contact with coolant (presumably) and thus overheating.
So I'm at the point of start up again so I thought it best to solicit techniques to best get the closed system back up to working snuff.
For example, I remember someone mentioning that sometimes the system has to be "burped", whatever that is.

All opinions and instructions on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
