92 240 Auto Tranny Doesn't Shift into drive when cold 200 1992

I have a '92 240 with 170K on it, which my heavy footed 17yr old son has been driving lately. Tranny has been trouble free until recently. Now it doesn't want to shift into drive when cold, unless you drop in into 1 first. Fluid and filter have been changed regularly. I put in a bottle of trans-x last night, after suctioning some fluid out so I didn't overfill. Time will tell if that helps or not. Transmission shifts solidly in all gears, so I'm thinking I have an internal seal problem somewhere. If I have to drop the tranny, where should I look for the problem - the front pump?
