Maybe he hooked up the battery cables backwards. In which case, he'd deserve the sparks he got. Any really large current draw will create a spark. For this reason it's always a good idea to shield your face when connecting battery cables, and also to make the last connection to a solid ground on the engine somewhere- i.e. NOT onto a battery terminal post.

Almost killed him huh? People are truly amazing.

So anyway, that clutch is pretty easily adjusted. Grab a pair of channel-lock pliers and twist the nut on the cable. You want to take tension off the cable.
