Heater core replacement - time or money? 200 1990

My wife's 245 apparently needs a new heater core, much steam when heat is turned on and nasty smell. I've put it off since spring, of course no problem in the summer. I've been trying to keep 3 old 240's going (for my wife and 2 sons, 19 & 24 yrs old, they do some not enough, I have a company car) and I think I'm getting burned out (also trying to keep up a 1925 house) and am thinking of paying to get the core replaced (although short on that $ thing too). What do you think I'm looking at in cost? Around $500 or so total?
Anyone have any advice that has done this, how long did it take, would you do it again? Seems like a pretty miserable job. Any links specifically to the 240 and not 700 series would be appreciated. Thanks.
