Starter Issues 200

My 91' 240 Wagon wouldnt start this morning. It was just clicking. I tried to jump the battery and that didnt work so I jumped the starter with a screwdriver and it started. My question is if its a loose cable or connection on the starter would it still start with the screwdriver? How can I find out if its the starter thats bad or if its something else like a connection? thanks
