Removing the Flange... 120-130 1967

I made a brief attempt to remove the output flange from my spare (wasted) M40 gearbox. I found that the 15/16" retaining nut was impossible to break free because the input shaft kept turning - even after attaching a vice grip to it. Any idea how to do this properly? I do not want to damage my J-Overdrive when I do my tranny switch.

Thanks for any suggestions.
