Hello,
I used to use this forum while I was living in the UK and was moving to Normandie France. I have now finally unpacked the computer and am now on-line. I am still renovating the house in France and live in Frace full-time.
I have got a 1986 740 GLE B230K carburetted volvo with a webber carb. I have re registered the volvo to French plates and insurance. It cost 731 euros. It was well worth doing as a volvo estate and all used cars are far more expensive than in the UK.
To re-register I had to change the headlamp glass, adjust the emmisions and adjust the seatbelts as they didnt retract properly. This was needed to pass the french MOT (controle technique) A controle technique is carried out every two years.
Then I needed a certificate of conformity to say that my car was acceptable to French regulations. The certificate was from volvo themselves and took 5 months to arrive. If I could not get one I couldnt register my car in France, so an anxious wait.
Then I went to the impots and prefecture to sort out all of the paperwork and the prefecture gave me the new number plate details.
I then had the number plate made up and fitted. Job done.
I have had some problems with the car. I have done a couple of trips back to the UK to visit relatives and on every occasion after about 95 miles the car will start to judder and buck and the rev counter needle jumps up and down between about a 1000 and 3000 rpm. I pull off the motorway and let it rest for 10 or 15 minutes and then I can continue on my way with no further problems and reach my destination which is about another 50 miles away.
Some background.
When I go to the UK I go on the motorway and travel at speeds of around 70MPH for about 2-2 and a half hours until it starts playing up. It starts to judder and splutter and the rev counter needle swings wildly up and down between a 1000 and 3000rpm. It drives fine before and after, but during its spluttering fit it seems underpowered.
I have replased the spark plugs with bosch ones and the ht leads and also replased the distributor cap and rotor arm and fuel filter. It hasn't made any difference. It still plays up on long journeys.
The carburetter is about 30 months old and was purchased new.
If you have any possible fixes I would be most pleased to hear them.
Many thanks James.
