On our 92 245 with 236K miles, I took the resto-mod approach... not restored to original as it has significant performance and appearance upgrades. So far, I have fully rebuilt the drivetrain, brakes, and seriously upgraded the suspension and tires, as well as the entire engine compartment... including paint.
Work has been detailed to the point of having all suspension components stripped and powder coated gloss black... including the cross member. Also ripped out the dash and rebuilt the heater/AC assembly. So far, I'm easily 12K into the job but well worth it considering how well it handles.
From there, I have $500 in the interior with another $500 to go. A complete new custom exhaust will run me another $500, windshield $200, and a show quality paint job from a master hotrod builder and Riddler award competitor, will run me another $2500. As far as paint goes, the body on this car is perfect with the exception of two paint chipped door dings so there is minimal body work to do.
With the exception of the engine machining, I have done all the work myself. Once the remaining jobs are finished, I'll complete the B230FT and drop it into the car... that should get me to the 20 to 25K range. To date, the car has been off-line for 14 very long months. If you plan on using it as your daily driver while you are "restoring it", you are kidding yourself. The car must be taken off-line to do it right! If you are talking about replacing all known wear items and putting a paint job on the car, the majority of that is possible on the weekends.
