'84 245...Aftermarket Stereo Install Question 200

"Olga, 1984 Volvo 245. A car barely alive. Gentlemen (& Ladies), we can rebuild her. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's next bionic Volvo. Olga will be that woman. Better than she was before. Better, stronger, faster."

Hello-
I'm a new, first-time Volvo owner (2 months) and am obviously new to this board, as well. I think all you guys/gals that spend time helping others with your expertise should be well-&-often commended. Thank you for helping us mechanically-challenged-but-willing-to-learn-in-order-to-offset-our-financial-challenge folks. She's my daily driver. My first (and last) car I purchase off eBay. Paid $1,500 for a fairly clean car, with 108k original miles. The guy misrepresented her pretty well, even in light of a myriad of questions over the phone. Drove 400+ miles to get her. Why I signed the bill of sale is another story. She miraculously made the drive home...timing belt (with 8k on it, went from 100% intact when car was picked up, to 95% broke I realized shortly after making it home!!...thanks to a bolt dropped into the timing unit when previous owner put "new" water pump gasket on). Bottom line is that I trusted him, he lied, and he has to live with it. I've moved on, plan on driving her for quite some time, begun to repair the dirty-laundry list now that it seems I've slowed the financial hemorrhaging, and have taken the requisite steps:
1) promptly named her
2) performed a few layman's excorcisms
3) assessed the loose-change-jar level
4) found an awesome Volvo specialist
5) discovered Brickboard
6) ordered a Bentley Bible
7) studied the FAQ best I can

Car had no stereo when I bought it...just the bare wires. Since it appears to be stereo-Sunday, I have a quick question. Will the '84 240 also have an amp, and if so, is it behind the lower cubby or to the left of the steering column? Should it be fully removed or just bypassed? (any quick directions/recommendations would be appreciated). I saw a few posts in the FAQ but they weren't for an '84 (though I'm assuming it's mostly similar?), but I'm just not 100% clear on their info. I have a standard mid-90s JVC tape deck with a small Radio Shack booster I'll be installing (nothing in the top cubby), and will not be using the factory speakers...just a pair of speaker boxes in the rear. I have the Metra kit...a friend who knows installs but never on a Volvo...and a near-frantic need to get some music in my car after 2 months!!!

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post. Keep up this great site!
