AC Recirculation Repair 200 1987

I get the feeling that the air recirculate feature of the air conditioning of my 87 245 is not working well. I definitely smell exhaust when driving behind smoggy vehicles (but otherwise don't smell exhaust) and I think the AC is less effective than it was a year ago. It stands to reason that the air recirculate feature may be failed in the "outside air" position. I know some interesting pneumatics are involved in the workings of the various flaps for directing air to the feet, defrost vents and selecting "outside air" or "recirculate." I'm curious if anyone has any advice off the top of their head on typical failures and repairs for this situation. The water channels from the vents behind the hood to the drains below the door sills are cleared of all leaves and other debris--so that can be ruled out.
