Thank you for the lawyer's input which is useful if there is any resistance.
The shop is in liquidation so no chance of buying another one there!

We have a "Sale of Goods Act" and a "Sale of Goods and Services Act" over here as well as an "Unfair Contract Terms Act" and a "Misrepresentation Act", there is good protection, and under the "Consumer Credit Act" the credit card company is Joint and Severally liable for everything.

Credit card companies are regulated by an independent Ombudsman, a free service to consumers which will give a ruling based on all this law and binding on the credit card company but not on the consumer, who can go to court afterwards if unhappy with the Ombudsman's decision.

It's not all bad news for UK lawyers in lost fees for Court work, as often it pays to have a lawyer help write up your case for the Ombudsman. But it is a lot cheaper than court, and the Credit card companies make good offers at an early stage rather than have the Ombudsman take a case as their reputation with him will be at stake.
