89' 240 DL made a 'thunk' lost compression/throttle, smelled exhaust and now kaput 200 1989

Hello everyone, it's been years since i've posted on this board, mainly because i've had a great run with my car with virtually no problems for the past 3 years. However, when I left work yesterday I noticed that my 240 seemed to lack gusto, was sluggish in reaching higher rpms, as I continued to drive it worked itself out a bit and appeared to be okay. Then after attempting to "go" at a green light, I heard a thunk, the car began to shake really badly and I smelled exhaust, I managed to get out of the left hand turn lane and hobbled over to the side of the road. It really just crawled, all the while shaking (of course I was shaking to at this point, it was an extremely busy intersection!) and when I stepped on the gas, nothing really happened. It has since been towed to the mechanic, who on first inspection was completely stumped. I am religous about maintenance, oil changes etc. My oil was plentiful, clean and not leaking from anywhere, same with the water. By the time I left the mechanic the car wouldn't start at all. It said it was if the engine had seized (160k on it) but he didn't see how it could have, what with adequate oil and all. Anyways, I have yet to hear from him yet, am worried sick about my beloved Volvo and so am turning to you guys, I don't want to harrass my mechanic. I'm afraid that I blew a rod or something like that, but really don't see how I could have since I take such damn good care of the thing and the timing belt was replaced during my last big tune up a few months ago. Any ideas guys?
