Wondering about the best lubrication for rubber bushings 444-544

Specifically, what kind of lube should I use on the clutch cross shaft where it bears on the rubber bushings? Also I wonder if it's desirable to lube the inside bore on rubber shock bushings? I've always been under the vague impression that some lubes were harmful to some rubbers or plastics.
