engine seal repair... $$$ worth it? 200

Hey BBers. I have often benefited from the experience out there. I could use your two cents right now.

I have my 1988 245 DL in the shop right now, 143k miles, for a routine flushing of the coolant and brake fluids. It's been about two years since a serious mechanic stuck his head under the hood, but I have kept up with all of the basic maintenance. I love the old brick.

The shop (TVG, in Portland, OR) called me today to say that what the car really needed was a replacement of the engine seals (3?) and the engine oil trap, because the seals were leaking oil, and the trap needs to something or other or else [insert bad thing]. I haven't noticed the oil levels dropping, though, driving around this past year. Must not be spewing that badly.

The engine work was quoted at $400-500. That is a lot of dough. Is this a must-fix? I'm hoping you all out there know more than I. Thanks for your help.
