Question on the stereo amplifiers under the steering column 700 1990

Hi Guys
Thanks for your posts. So, if I am understanding this correctly:
The amp gets its power via the DIN cable from the stereo head unit?
So, presumably, the negative (or earth) for the amp is the black wire that comes into it via the black plastic connector to the amp which also has the speaker wires?

In that case, I have to assume that the amp is getting power because the head unit is on.....
So, I surmise that the amp is broken......

If the amp is broken, what do you guys think of this:
I read in the stereo manual that the stereo outputs 2 X 8 Wats (via the DIN cable, I guess). What if I simply wire up just 2 (front) speakers into the stereo via the DIN socket (and forget about the amp)? I would need to take apart a DIN plug and wire in the 4 speaker wires and the sound would not be hugely loud, but at least I'd get 2X 8 wats which should do me.

Thoughts?
Pete
