Hello All,
I am looking to purchase a 89 244DL for sale near my work as another daily driver or to replace one of the V6's I currently have. The price is right... about $985. The is in overall good shape for the price but there is one major thing wrong with it. It is a AW70 tranny with the standard B230F. When you drive the car you hear this loud roaring sound coming from the rear of the car. The sound echo's inside the car and is very loud indeed. I have done the standard testing to determine the source of the sound. At a complete stop no noise is heard. The sound comes after about 5MPH+ and has no affect if you are out of gear or not. Basically when the rear wheels are turning more than 5MPH the noise is heard. Applying the brakes or engaging the parking brake have no affecet on the noise. No wI will say it again... this noise is loud.
I have had a driveshaft center bearing squeal on me before (79 264GL) and it sounded like a jet engine's whirl but it was not this loud. If I would have to describe it I would say it sounds like bad brakes that are metal to metal when coming to a stop. I would like the noise to be the driveshaft center support bearing so this cheap 240 turns out to be a quick fix but I am hesitant if the problem maybe the rear bearings or entire rear differential. Any insight from those who have heard center support driveshaft bearing noise, rear differential noise or rear wheel bearing noises would be great. The seller is motivated so I can negotiate a better price but I do not want to spend to much on that noise to get the car up to snuff since I am already having to explain to the wife how another Volvo followed me home (and I am running out of excuses).
