Bushing Replacements 200 1989

Sorry 'bout the empty post....

I just replaced all bushings on my '88 240, except for the rear trailing arms - the big ones, which I'll get to next weekend. I fabricated "the tool" a few years back when replacing the bushings, as poly were not available.

Plan on a weekend for the front and another for the rear. I did ball joints and tie rod ends when replacing the fronts. I ordered all poly from FCP (Super pro)and I really like the ride with my Bilstein HD's, TME lowering springs. Sways are coming.

You do not need a press to remove the rubber bushings. I drilled out the rubber around the center crush tube (where the bolts go through) and then used a utility knife to remove rubber down to the metal housing. Then hack sawed a 1/2" wedge of the metal housing, collapsed the bushing and removed it. The Rear trailing arms need the existing metal shell, so I'm going to drill around the crush tube, remove it and then use a wire wheel on my drill to remove the remaining rubber.

Clean the surfaces well, grease liberally and use your bench vise to press the poly bushings in. THEN add the crush tube that goes in the middle, after greasing liberally. Replacing the ploy waaaay down the road will be a snap, as you remove the crush tube and then remove the old poly.
