M46 Overdrive Solenoid 200 1976

My car has not achieved overdrive since I took possession a couple of hundred miles ago. OD light on, voltage at solenoid, faint clicking from solenoid when switched, and fresh Castrol ATF Type F filled to top. I took the solenoid off and blew through it per the Haynes manual. It checked out while there was no current going through it. When I applied current and watched the piston the movement was not so impressive. I seem to have read on a previous post that there should be a sharp metallic click when opened and closed. I get a faint sound when current is applied and really none when it is removed. I would estimate the travel of the piston to be about 1mm. Does it sound like this thing is doing its job? I want to crack it open but I just broke my clip removal tool.
