Brake Booster, Friend or Foe? 120-130 1966

I hope this post is not redundant.... What is the story with brake boosters. Where they offered as a option with the 122, or are they simply an aftermarket item? I have a booster mounted on my car with brake lines going from the master cylinder to the brake line splitter. The vacuum line (I think) that runs to the intake manifold is not hooked up. Do boosters actually work? Should I junk this thing and run the line direct from the MS to the splitter? I have a brand new booster in a box that came with the car and am not sure what to do here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg
