Intermittent Wipers are not so intermittent 200 1986

My semi-faithful 245DL AKA Inga has an issue with the intermittent wiper setting on the front wiper motor. When you push the stalk up it will wait about five seconds and then it is like the wiper motor is in the lower of the two speed settings. There is no intermittent to the motor speed at all. Did replace the wiper relay with a donor part a couple of weeks back, without effect. Added a homemade ground strap to the motor chassis that cleared up a ghost two years back, so my thinking is that this is not a Gnd issue. The contacts in the harness at the motor look like ones that are twenty years old. Used an eraser and have them with at least a shine but that fixed nothing either. The motor is stopping about 40 degrees higher on the windshield that it should, and replacement is in order. Will be making a journey to Pick Ur Parts later today.

What would you check if after replacing the motor the problem remains?

Right now this is not a major problem, but maybe a foreshadowing of things to come.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.
