Loud growl and thumping sound. 700 1988

Another problem has crept up on the 88 745. When the car is under load and moving the car has developed a loud growl/thumping sound. It is louder when the car is cold. As the car warms up the growling sound diminishes and a thumping sound can be heard. It goes away when the gas pedal is released and the car is moving. The sound does not appear when the car is not moving and in park. I replaced the control arm stay bushings, sway bar and link bushings last year. I looked underneath the car today and the link bushings seem to need to be replaced again. The stay bushings look great and are tight. Sway bushings look good. The sound appears to be coming from directly underneath the center of the car. The trans & OD is working good. The trans mount seems soft. The exhaust system (starla)is only a couple of years old.
Any ideas of what is causing the noise?
Thanks Brad
