Valve spring compressor 140-160

Now that I have all of the old parts off the #1 intake valve, which had a broken spring, and everything else looks to be in good shape: where do I find a spring compressor?
When I talked to my mechanic over the phone, he claimed that the spring compressors were not generic but engine specific. I don't mind buying a new spring and collets and pressuring it all back together, even though this is a new area for me. But a spring compressor??? For a one time shot? Can these things be rented? Who would have such a tool?
If you could guide me in the right direction, I would be happy.
BTW, I found the spring that goes around the rubber gasket and the other half of the retaining collet is now in the bottom of the oil pan. I rolled the push rod on the kitchen counter and could not visibly see any bending. The valve guide appears to be intact and the valve does not wobble and slides smoothly up and down.

Thanks,
Klaus
