Noise - dash or firewall area - 240 200 1990

My 1990 240 DL sedan is making a noise that seems to be inside the dash or near the firewall. Vibration seems to cause it. Sounds like a plastic cylinder is rattling. Occurs during engine start up, during excellerations, over bumpy road surfaces. Power train seems fine. About 2 years ago I had work performed on the vaccuum controls for the air vent system. Any ideas out there??? 90 240DL, 203K, original owner, getting ready for my 16 yr old daughter.
