Whine in rear axle getting worse 200 1989

Axle whine that occurs at 60mph under load has become significantly louder recently. This started to develop about 40,000 ago at 125,000 miles. Last year the pinion seal started losing about a pint every oil change. Now there's a mild binding and creaklike noise that occurs when making a tight turn while parking. I beleave its probably in the axle.
Is there any relatively easy way to check this out or are there other likely culprits?
If I do need to replace the axle,`what price would I expect to pay to have a used one installed?
