Nagging shock clatter. 200

Recently installed some KYB shocks in the rear of my '89 245, and since then there has been a very bothersome clatter coming from back there whenever I go over a bump. With the music down I can even notice it going up the freeway.
I tried electrical tape on the shock studs and putting the washers on either side and then the outside only. No dice.
The noise is so nagging I'm just gonna put the old shocks back in...unless this community of bricksters has any ideas.
