Silly question about those 2 plastic screens on the transmission/bell housing 200

What are those for and what's behind them? I was washing/degreasing parts of the engine bottom and near the oil pan and tranny earlier today with GUNK CITRUS degreaser. While I was rinsing the oil sump and the bell housing area, I wondered if it was okay to spray water so close and into the grill screens--well, it wasn't like I was deliberatly sprayiny water into the screens but just that it could not be avoided. Is it safe to spary water in the transmission screens? I'm thinking it should be okay as they are exposed to rain water and puddles.
