Just wanted to share with you all about this problem that has plagued me for the last 4 yrs. I read about this problem here, but nothing ever solved the problem. the problem is that the power suddenly cuts off and one has to coast to a safe place. then after 15 min to 1hr, the car runs again. Also during that time that i'm waiting, the engine cranks, but no spark, so one just has to sit it out. Well, after 4 yrs of limiting myself to driving on the slow lane on freeways, or right lanes on surface streets, I think i finally found what the problem is. But first, let me share what I changed which helped the problem but never fixed it.
1) I had one of those rotted out engine wire harness which I replaced.
2) In tank fuel pump went out, replaced
3) The fuel pump relays that are located on passenger's side
My car went for months without any power loss, and when i least expected it, bam, all power suddenly lost, and found myself using the right lanes again.
Well, to make story short, at least for me, i found i had a bad battery, i never would have suspected it would be such an easy part, but i certainly overlooked it. I found this out when my car stopped and my wife showed up within minutes and i thought i would try jumping it even though my battery still had plenty of juice left. And Wam!, car started right away. I took of the jumper cables, and no dice. Got a brand new battery put in next day (by the way mine was more than 4yrs old), and now it runs like a champ. If anyone out there experienced anything like i have, check or replace battery, that is most likely your problem. I'm proud to say this car has 198,000 mi and been in the family since 1983, when dad passed away i inherited this beloved brick. And now, finaly I can say i'm about 2 or 3 months away from reaching the 200k milestone. Want to thank this forum for being a starting place and what to look for. (ps i inherited car with 185,000 mi and i wasnt gonna give up until 200k)
