tach needle jumping around 200 1984

I have recently come across a problem with my tach. It seems to be more noticeable when the car is warmed up, but does not occur all the time The tach will fluctuate wildy jumping up and down between 0 and 3000 rpms. There is no change in way the car is running when the tach is jumping around. I have checked the wire and connections from the tach to the coil.

I suppose where should I look next? Is the tach on its way out, or could this be a sign of an altenator problems?

The car is an 84 242 turbo m46
