overdrive on transmission slips, please help...... 200

when i drive my volvo 245 manual down the road for the first 5 minutes, i'll keep the overdrive for the transmission off or it will ingage and slip in and out of overdrive without the 5th gear light in the control pannel going off. after 5 minutes or so, i'll engage it and it will work better but will slip like it's disengaging for a second or 2 then engage again, even at speeds of 75 to 80 M.P.H. it will do this 3 times during my 35 mile commute to and from work each day.
can anyone tell me what's going on with the overdrive on my volvo, is this fixable or will i have to get another overdrive for the tranny? also, can the overdrive be taken off my volvo 245 without taking the transmission out too? who works on these overdrive's? any recommends? any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
