I have a 1991 240 that stalled out today. In the last 500 miles I have replaced the timing belt, waterpump, plugs and wires and flametrap.
After driving around quite a bit today the car started hesitating and then stalled after excelerating from a stop light. I dug around the hood looking for loose connections and found that the lead from the coil to the distributer was a little off. I was able to start the car and get it home. It started stuttering again. Later I drove for about 30 minutes and got it to do it again.
The temp is good, the wires to the plugs and dizzy are good. No codes in the fuel system computer. After reading the 700/900 faq, I think it is either the fuel pump relay or the fuel filter.
According to the Bentley book the fuel pump relay is in the glove box where we have been hearing an odd sound as of late. A very intermittant sound that last a second. Also I did smell a little gas as I was rooting around under the hood though there is none in the crankcase.
The fuel filter is probably well overdue to be done so either way I will change that. Is there a way to check the relay? Would that cause a stumbling stall if it was faulty (as opposed to just dying outright?)?
