Hello:

I doubt it is the filter-- more likely either RPM sensor on the bellhousing (look for deteriorating insulation), the fuel system relay (resolder or replace) or the ignition amplifier (power stage).

In your case, it sounds like your fuel system relay is in need of attention first-- classic unstable relay due to a cold solder joint causing the buzzing noise.

The RPM sensor is about $29, and a bit of a pain to access. The relay and the ignition amplifier are also reasonably priced online. These 3 things cause a significant percentage of the stalls and stumbles, and in my mind are good preventative maintenance by the time the car hits 150K mi.
