oil overfill - damage? 900 1993

Well I knew the little woman wasn't particularly saavy when it comes to automotive maintenance, but I guess I serously misjudged her familiarity.

I checked the oil the other day on the 940 Turbo, and it was down a litre. I went to put pour some in, and realized that number one son had put waste oil back on the shelf (yet another disaster waiting to happen). Anyway, I told my wife to pick up a 4 litre container, and I'd put some in that night. Forgot about it, then yesterday morning she calls me at work, so I told her to pour in 1 litre - "you know about how much that is, right?"

Last night I get home, and hear that the Volvo was "blowing smoke" when my son took it for a drive. My wife then tells me she had poured the whole container in (4.4 litres). "It didn't come up to the top (oil filler hole) so I just kept pouring." (You're allowed to laugh at this point, although I'm certainly not!) She drove it about 100 kilometers afterwards, and apparantly smelt oil burning near the end of her trip. My son said the smoke he saw was white, so he didn't think it was oil burning.

I haven't had a chance to even look at it yet, but I was hoping someone can tell what damage, if any, this overfill by about 3 litres might have caused.
