overdrive is very touchy 200 1984

Hey all,

I have a 1984 volvo 240 DL manual trans. station wagon. Its not in the greatest shape right now as two things are really keeping it from being a great commuter.

1. the electronic overdrive tends to be very fickle (for lack of a better word). I can never get it to shift into overdrive when I want it to, but if I wiggle the shifter back and forth until i get it in just the right spot the OD will kick in and operates beautifully. However, if i so much as look at it (even just a small tap) the OD will kick off and I might not be able to get it back in at all. could there be a problem with a switch that tells the car its in forth gear?

2. The car has a pretty rough idle and is sometimes hard to start. the idle takes a dive, almost dies, if I'm pulling up to a stop light and put in the clutch. I replaced the spark plugs and wires at well as air filter. Its a fuel injected car which I have no experience with when it comes to the fuel system, as all my cars have been carb-ed.

Thanks for any suggestions!!
