transmission 'whine' 900

My wife's 92 940 sedan with 240K miles has developed a soft "high pitch" whine in the (auto) transmission. She noticed it this weekend when she went out of town (50 miles) to visit relatives. I test drove it when she came home and it does have a "whine", especially in the lower gears, although, I'm not sure that it hasn't been there all along, and was just noticed. The transmission shifts out good, dosen't slip and has been serviced in the past. The fluid level is full to (1 pint) overfilled, so it's not that. Is this the same transmission that my son's 91 240 has....3 speed auto with OD? If so, I've got a spare transmission that I took off a parts car. I hope that I don't need it, but it's good to know if it's the right one.
Any ideas?
thanks in advance
steve
