Fuel mixture very rich!!! Help please!!! 200

Hello all!

I am in the process of picking up an 87' 245 to replace the 88' 245 that
my son destroyed last week. the current owners let me bring it home tonight so I can get it inspected tomorrow which is pretty cool of them to let me have it checked out first before I buy.

It was once taken care of, this i can tell, but these owners have neglected some very simple things that have me worried!

Here is the problem:

The car doesn't seem to want to start right up without some help from the gas pedal but it does start after a minute or two of cranking. Then is starts right up! At idle it seems to idle steady, then hicup, then idle steady, then hicup(miss), etc. it doesn't cut out though.
I smell gas!!! Pretty strong smell of gas like it is running very rich.

What are some possible things that could be causing these symptoms???
I can look at the car in the morning and maybe try to correct it if I just had a starting point. the car is an automatic if that would make a difference.
I also have the complete 88' 245 right next to it so i may have interchangable parts if needed!

Any help is definitely appreciated as i am trying not to have to spend anymore at the mechanics other than the inspection fee!

thanks again all!

Karl
