Cooling System Theory Question 200 1993

Greetings All,
Was wondering on if the thermostat in say 50 degree weather is constantly opening and closing adjusting the throughput of coolant at operating speed or if rather after warmup it just stays in the full open position. Anybody have thoughts on this? I have the original mechanical fan.

The reason I am wondering is my previously rock hard on the 9 oclock positon temp gauge (temp comp board bypassed a few years) has recently started to intermittently wander down and hang at the 7:30 or 8:00 position. I'm thinking that if the thermostat does adjust the flow constantly at speed that's probably the most likely culprit for this reduced temperature. I have cleaned the 3 pin voltage stabilizer behind the gauge when I was bypassing the temp comp. board. The only other things in the loop I can think of are the sensor and the gauge but I think a 5 year old thermostat is more likely. All comments greatly appreciated. I love the Brickboard.
