Shoud an 89 be more peppy than a 93? 200

I have a newly aquired 93 wagon and my trusty old 89 sedan. The 89 seems to accelerate better than the 93.
As far as I know they should have the same horsepower. They have the same engine, same fuel injection, same gearbox (m46) and the same tire size. The only significant difference is the rear end. The 93 was an automatic so it has the taller rear end and its rpms are about 400rpm higher in overdrive than the 89. So it should be peppier than the 89, but its not. Am I missing something or should I be looking for a problem with my 93?
