replacing air mass meter? 700 1990

Air Mass Meter problems are usually related to poor running when cold, or even a no-start condition in LH 2.4 cars, and if they fail completely, can cause stalling under medium to high load conditions.

It doesn't sound like any of these. I'm assuming the car is a turbo? You didn't say- most 740 non-turbos wouldn't have an AMM anyway in 1990. California cars however, would have one typically.
