Strange RPM Drop 200 1986

When I'm accelerating uphill, or just cruising along level roadway, there is a noticeable lag occurring every five seconds or so. The tachometer drops about 100-200 RPM and then recovers, as does the power. It "feels" as if the timing is retarding itself.

Opening the throttle further produces the same symptom at a higher RPM. My B230F with automatic and LH 2.2 is in excellent tune. It starts, idles and runs just fine; never a backfire, never a stall. Fuel economy (92 octane) remains consistent. It is right on spec, as I am able to determine from the Bentley manual. And I've already upgraded the rotten original harness!

I've read about the knock sensor or a vacuum leak being possible culprits. I sure can't find any vacuum leaks, but I've yet to change out the knock sensor. Could a bad sensor--or its connection--be causing this?

Having searched the book and the Board from front to back, I'm wondering: am I missing anything? Any fellow sufferers that have found the answer? I'd sure appreciate any and all ideas,

Brendan.
