Oil Pump Reinforcing Ring 120-130

I've ordered the IPD oil pump reinforcing ring for my 71 B20E motor. In my limited examination of the engine diagram, it looks like the ring should go on top of the shaft under the distributor. Question is, does the whole oil pump and shaft need to come out, or can I just drop it in before I put the distributor on.

I'm not sure if it comes with any instructions, but this will be the last thing I need to address before I drop the new engine into my crippled amazon, so want to get it right the first time.
