Rear tailgate latch 200 1988

I simply opened and closed my tailgate/hatch and now the little finger that is supposed to go around the catch will not open up. It strikes the bar and will not open to go around it securely. I tried unlocking and locking it a few times, used the inside release a few times, pried the finger with a small screw driver, etc. to no avail. The searches I tried in the archives seem to all be about misalignment, not the finger/knuckle. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.
