ammeter reads only discharge 700

I installed an aftermarket ammeter and it reads only discharge both with engine off and engine running, idle or faster. I wired it per instructions, in series, using a heavy cable about the same size as the wires from the hot side of the battery. The cable is a small battery-to-starter cable from a 76 Civic -- not the heftier sizes of today. I didn't want to run a heavy cable all the way to the dash, so I mounted the meter under the hood, near the battery -- just as a way to check on charging rate now and then. I called the manufacturer -- they had no idea why this would happen. I have never had charging problems, before or after installation. Any ideas?
