Car sounds loud inside, quiet outside. What's the rub? 200 1983

Hello again guys. Trying to finally finish up this long term project on getting my 16 year old daughter into this beautiful black '83 245GL. Engine is running fairly nicely and starts up great. It runs nice and quiet with the new muffler system from front to back, until you get inside and shut the door. It is loud and my only conclusion is metal on metal rubbing and vibrating somewhere. It is NOT the muffler system as it is attached and hung properly and double checked. This noise was there with the old system, too. So what else could it likely be? It is loud enough that I don't want my daughter driving it until that is quieted down. It makes the car sound like it is running rough. Please help?
