Thanks to all you folks for the information on fuel pump replacement. I got the job done yesterday morning. The removal and subsequent reinsertion of the assembly wasn't as tricky as I had feared. However, getting that ##$%!@^ plastic retainer threaded back on the tank was one PITA. The sock filter was folded under itself on one end essentially putting two extra layers of the filter beneath the pump intake. This may have been straining the pump. I was temporarily bummed out when I hooked the old pump directly to my battery charger and the sucker ran (sending the remaining fuel onto the driveway). I tried again later though and it did not run so I am still fairly certain that this was causing my no start condition.
The only hitch was on the electrical end. The new pump had an entirely different connection than the old one. The new pump has a two pin plastic connector deal so I used the wires that were included on that end, clipped the terminal off the other ends, clipped the original wires, stipped all and connected the with a butt splice and crimped connectors. I was careful and really, really, really think I did a good job with the splice. Even so, I have this feeling that I may blow myself up one day if there should be a spark when the splice is above the fuel level in the tank. Anyone had one of these babies explode on them?
Anyhow, thanks again to all who provided recent and archival information that gave me the confidence to undertake the job.
