'87 740 ball joints 700 1987

Need to replace the left ball joint on wife's 87 740, the protector boot has ceased to exist. Need to replace as a pair, left and right or does it matter? Any surprises? Looks to be a simple unbolt the old and bolt in the new and get it aligned. Did an old Nissan Sentra front drive ball joints a while ago, it was that simple. Could a rear drive 740 be that simple? I hope?
