B18 Autopsy... 120-130 1967

I began the relatively straightforward process of removing my B18 and transfering some components to the new B20. I've not pulled the whole engine yet or opened the sump, but I've found part of the problem.

I went to withdraw the oil pump/distributor shaft and the cam gear came out without the shaft. The pin was sheared off separating the cam gear from the shaft. The shaft itself was difficult to withdraw but came out without any obvious damage other than some burned oil at the base. I couldn't make out the condition of the oil pump gear (where I just installed a reinforcing ring on the B20), but I'll look at it more closely tomorrow when I pull the motor.

Right now I'm thinking that something might have jammed up the oil pump and snapped the gear pin. However, it is just as likely that the pin sheared after the pump failed as a safety feature to prevent the cam from seizing and destroying itself.

Any thoughts?
