Testing 1975 Electronic Ignition 140-160 1975

I got the distributor, module, coil and harness this weekend. Everything looks really good. I think the process will be fairly easy, but I do have one question. Following the VClassics article (http://vclassics.com/archive/breakerless.htm), a diode was placed between the starter and ignition module. Is this neccessary for the 164 or is only for cars with the armored cable? I have a copy of the '75 164 wiring diagram and the blue wire from the module goes to one side of the ballast resistor and then connects to a second blue wire that goes straight to the fusebox. Any clarification will help...
As always, thanks so much for the help,
Nick A.
