87 740 accelerates poorly 700

I'm more than likely buying an '87 740 GLE wagon tomorrow for $200. I owned the car a number of years ago and recently saw it on the market again. It needs a little work, but is decent overall with only 141 K miles.

When I looked in it today I found a repair bill from the local dealer where the previous owner had it worked on. It said that the car needed a new in tank pump and a fuel line replaced. The guy who is selling it now says that it runs and idles fine, but has no power when you try to accelerate. I started it up and it did idle just fine. The previous owner seems to think that the timing belt is a tooth or two off, but I'm not sure. It hasn't had a timing belt replacement recenly, so why would that be the case?

I also wouldn't think that a bad intank pump would make it run this way. It doesn't miss, but rather just wants to die when you try to accelerate.The techs at the dealer hooked a fuel pressure gauge up to it and the main pump seems to be working okay. I had an '89 740 GLE 16 valve that did this and it turned out to be the ECU.

I'd appreciate any thoughts with this one. I can drive the car home like it is since I don't have to go far.
